Of course, every little bit helps :) No word yet on how the recovery process is coming along... we'll see if anything develops on that front. But until then I'm trying to put it out of my mind. If I think too much on all that was lost it gets too depressing! I also regret not having a record of the things I have sent to others - not in a narcissistic way, but because it's just nice to be able to go back and check what it is you've said to certain people, you know? But I guess this is one of the drawbacks to being a pack rat - when you lose something, you really lose it all!

I can only answer that I am mighty glad you have a blog on top of a mail box so that some of our exchanges have been preserved. And those of other partners as well. Does that alleviate the loss, somewhat?

Future reading is of course what motivates me to keep almost everything I receive. There is nothing quite like flipping through a photo album or sifting through old letters to open the floodgates of emotion. Of course these tangibles aren't necessary to relive the experience - they just help an awful lot. Which is what makes the loss of my emails so heartbreaking in a way! Although I still feel a little silly. Electronic correspondence doesn't get the same kind of respect as the "proper" written form - in many cases justifiably. But I did have some lovely emails that I will truly miss revisiting. (Unless my dear boyfriend manages to repair what's left to the point of them being accessible - which is something he's kindly offered to work on :))

Is it really a fear?It seems to me who have kept ages of mails from friends and lovers both written and electronic that it is more the anticipated pleasure to some day re-read it and relive the emotions attached to that part of my life, mostly joyfull, some sad but all of them memorable. Of course the most important are etched in our hearts but forgotten little details count as well.

I feel the souvenir of an event is as important as the event itself. Mais j'ai toujours aimé avoir le beurre et l'argent du beurre plus le sourire de la
crémière, en prime!
