Estelle Getty, 1923-2008
Tuesday, 22 July 2008 | 14:29Actress Estelle Getty died this morning, three days before her 85th birthday. Above, a clip of one of my favourite shows, The Golden Girls, featuring Estelle as the aged Sophia, telling one of her famous (and often wildly embellished) stories.

“The Golden Girls” was one of my favourite series; I used to watch it every week whilst I ate my bedtime snack of cold cereal. The program ran from the mid-80s to early 90s, and was considered ground-breaking at the time, as all four of the main characters were senior citizens – highly unusual for a prime-time American comedy. But the writing was sharp and witty, and the acting was fabulous, and the show was lauded by critics and the general public alike.
