Je te rassure, j’ai cité ça pour faire l’idiot : je ne comprends pas moi-même ce que ça veut dire. Du coup je regrette également de n’avoir pas fait mes études en français !

Slawy: I know next to nothing about German, but I do know that almost all languages are crazy creatures, endlessly altering their forms and behaviours. I have a tough enough time keeping up my bilingualism; I admire you for your multilingualism.

Moonbeam: Cela m’arrive de temps en temps, mais pas toujours… It’s those moments that confirm that I actually do know some French. (Otherwise I remain doubtful…) It had never occurred to me until high school, when one of my friends (non-immersion) asked me how I could translate so quickly whilst completing my French homework; it was only then that I realised that I wasn’t translating my thoughts from English to French (as she apparently had to do) – I was simply thinking in French. That is still essential if I want to attempt to write in French: I have to focus, get myself into a kind of mental bubble which English cannot penetrate. Which obviously isn’t too successful in my predominately English-speaking daily life!

Seems the only way out of your two last sentences is to get into the habit of thinking directly in the appropriate language,doesn’t it, not trying to translate from one into the other?

I guess I should keep these things in mind when I’m working on my German. Indeed, a language can seem a bit plain without all these options. Still, I know I didn’t think that way about German or Polish before I knew English, so I’m still aiming at full comfort with German, despite the reduced vocabulary.
