After experiences with other “social networking” sites (like MySpace – which I quite frankly despised and barely ever looked at), and after seeing the degree to which many friends had become addicted to them, I vowed to stay far away from the new kid on the block: Facebook. However, after realizing that my 10-year high school reunion was being planned exclusively on the site, I finally caved and signed up. I suppose it was inevitable; Facebook has been a sort of modern-day revolution. Originally created by a university student for his professor as a way to get to know his students, Facebook has slowly spread its minimalist blue and white tentacles all over the Internet. Happily, unlike other sites, one can’t simply add random people to one’s profile: generally, Facebook “friends” are limited to those whom one knows in real life. Marriages, divorces, pregnancies, housewarmings, reunions… all are announced and organised within the parameters of the website. Simultaneously a way to keep up with current friends, to catch up with people with whom you’ve lost touch over the years, and to while away countless hours using meaningless applications (I too am guilty of this), it has become a part of many, many people’s daily lives. And despite myself, I have become firmly entrenched in the Facebook universe.
