I can't quite believe it took me so long to realise that this was actually The Scarlet Letter; I kept saying to myself, "I wonder what movie this could be..." Chalk it up to late-night (or early-morning) fatigue :)
Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" offers a terrifying vision of a world of ever-decreasing rights for women. She set it in the present, and perhaps that's why it's so effective - women are essentially reduced to mere baby-making machines, something that seems unbelievable in a modern context, but she sets up the story in such a way that the removal of women's rights is insiduous and subtle and gradual, and in the end you can see how eerily plausible her scenario is. It remains one of my favourite books, but every time I read it it frightens me!

I remeber reading this book long ago in my teens, perhaps the first I managed to read in English and being horrified at the fate of this women. Beautifully written, though, it made compelling reading. That and Stefan Sweig "24 hours in the life of a women" read in German, left a lasting trace in my mind. To this day I needn't read them over to have the plot and main events come to mind though I never saw the films made from them. Another one is John Fowles "The Maggus". Do you know this author?
