Unsubscribe Me
Thursday, 22 November 2007 | 14:08
The first of three films to be released by Amnesty International for their new campaign, “Unsubscribe Me” – asking people to ‘unsubscribe’ to the use of torture and the suspension of human rights in the so-called War on Terror, and to say no to “a world governed by fear and accepting of racial discrimination”.
For this video, the setting of a military “interrogation” was not simply simulated: it was reproduced. The actor was placed into a CIA-approved ’stress position’ (detailed in the CIA interrogation handbook) for 6 hours, then was filmed. What one sees and hears – the whimpering, the crying, the shaking, the perspiring – are all real.
I should add that the Amnesty website states that this video is unsuitable for people under the age of 14. (There is also a warning that accompanies this video, stating that “some viewers may find this disturbing.” Frankly, I should hope so.)
